According to the CDC and Prevention, the primary cause of accidental deaths among children one to four is drowning. Here are a few pool safety tips that parents can use to have the upper hand in maintaining a safe swimming pool area.
ADULT SUPERVISION
Adult supervision is the most crucial element in ensuring children’s safety around water.
POOL BARRIERS
Pool fences and locked gates are crucial in stopping children from accessing the pool, though adult supervision remains vital.
REMOVE TOYS
When the pool is closed, remove water toys from the swimming pool to reduce the chance of young children being attracted to the pool.
SWIMMING CLASSES
Swimming lessons are essential for children, contributing significantly to their safety and growth.
When a child is missing, always begin your search at the pool, even if it is not in use.
It’s equally crucial for adults to learn CPR in case of an emergency.
Keep Pool Water Clean
Ensure your pool water is clean and balanced; either you or a professional pool service should maintain its sanitation, equilibrium, and freedom from debris. If you have an automatic pool cleaner, remove it when you and your kids are swimming. Otherwise, the operating hoses could entangle swimmers.
Pool Drain Safety
It is important to keep children away from pool drains and to ensure they are covered to avoid entrapment.
The curved shape of new, safer drains ensures they cannot be entirely blocked by a body part. It’s crucial for parents to verify their pool and spa have anti-entrapment drain covers that are in use before letting children swim.
It is imperative that all pools and spas are equipped with VGB-compliant drain covers.
Create Shaded Areas
The installation of awnings and the purchase of shade umbrellas are recommended actions to enhance outdoor comfort. This can reduce the chance of sunburn and dehydration. Make sure kids wear sunscreen and encourage them to take breaks for water and snacks.
Dry Drowning
It’s always a good idea to consult your doctor as a precaution, even if your child only had a brief scare involving water.
Drowning occurs when water obstructs breathing by entering the airway and lungs. “Dry drowning” involves airway spasms triggered by water intake through the nose or mouth, but without lung involvement.
Dry drowning typically occurs shortly after leaving the water, when water irritates the airways. In cases of drowning due to laryngospasm, autopsies have found evidence of “dry drowning” in 10% to 15% of victims, a phenomenon triggered by airway spasms upon water contact, leading to cardiac arrest.
“Dry drowning” describes delayed symptoms following a water incident. While the phrase points to genuine issues needing medical care, remember that “dry drowning” isn’t an official medical term.
Even a small amount of water poses a danger; a child can tragically drown in as little as 2 inches.
